Give me the nice, bright colours
This week I was back to school and preparing to face my final year of tuition before actually BECOMING A PHOTOGRAPHER. I received some sage advice this week from people in the business which has come at just the right time in my career.
Firstly, the need to develop my own style is the most important thing I will do. Prospective employers, especially in the press, need to have a good idea what you can bring back to them. Right now I don't have a style -I like shooting wide, sometimes from the hip and I prefer candid street shots to studio work. This is all I have managed to pin down so far and I now have to apply these vague notions to my college work.
Secondly, colour is the way to go. Black and white is great for Sunday supplement think-pieces but in the day-to-day world of photojournalism colour is vital. This was borne out during a visit to the World Press Photo Awards 2006 in Edinburgh where the vast majority were colour. I really love shooting b & w, but colour photography is a vital commercial skill. I'm not as sure of myself with colour so it will be a bit of a learning curve, you can follow my exciting journey on these pages.
The photo above was taken in Venice, and I really love the colours I managed to capture. Hopefully it is the first step on the road to a successful career in colour photography - long may the curves palette reign, Photoshoppers.
