During my sojourn to Edinburgh I took many photos of the Fringe 'buzz'. The Royal Mile was jammed with drama students and their fliers, trying to tempt passers-by with their siren song of '...political satire...a wry look....challenging perceptions....a new theatrical experience..." The presidency of George W Bush has really proved to be manna from heaven for amateur dramatists and part-time stand up comedians.
I tried during the day to get a few street portraits of these youths hawking their cultural wares. Everybody I asked let me take their picture and in many cases were surprised when I actually asked for a flier so I could remember the name of their show. The guy above didn't have much choice though, as he had sellotaped his mouth closed and couldn't protest.
I think the clown in the picture says pretty much everything you need to know about the Edinburgh Fringe - what would normally be considered an unusal scene can so easily be upstaged, in this case by a group of students lying down in the middle of the Royal Mile. Also, it refers to that other golden rule of the Fringe - it's a goldmine for face-paint manufacturers.
